About the composition
Aeolia was my senior capstone in my undergraduate studies at the University of California Santa Cruz. It explores note relations through chance as there is no time signature or tempo. Performers are instructed to move through and repeat 28 individual cells, creating a sonic ecosystem where motifs arise, but no one instrument is ever more important than another. Aeolia presents a tonal center in each instrument, but visualizes the broader piece as pitch class sets with how each part interacts. The piece slowly and innocuously moves through three tonal centers and each performance lasts generally 20-28 minutes.
